During this project you will:

Learn how to form and discuss your own opinion on equality.

Learn about different examples of inequality.

Learn how to use online apps. (TikTok, LessonUp, Quizziz)

Learn how to show inequality (with TikTok)

Train your speaking, reading, listening and presenting skills.

Practice how to give feedback.

What do we need to do/make?

• Groups of 5
• A logbook/diary on your teamwork
• Research on one of the inequalities shown
• A written plan/script for your TikTok
•  A TikTok video showcasing an inequality

What does the word 'inequality' mean?

Take two minutes to think about any types of inequality or unfair treatment that you know of.

Inequality

What inequalities or unfair situations did you see in the video?

Inequality takes many shapes:

• Many different types
• Can affect our opportunities in life
• Affects how people see and treat us
•  Affects how we see ourselves
• Sometimes they are not obvious

Racial inequality/ethnic discrimination:

Unfair treatment based on race or ethnicity.

Examples:

• Not getting a job because your last name sounds Arabic
• Police officers are more likely to arrest/pull over darker skinned people
• Uyghur camps in China
• Asian people being targeted as the cause for COVID-19

Class inequality:

Rich vs. poor

Money can give many opportunities in life (school, work, socially)

41% of all money is owned by 0.7% of all people

Most people view rich people positively and poor people negatively

Think about:

Things that are more difficult without money

Things that become easier with money

How can not having much money affect your school life?

What would become easier for you if you had a lot of money?

Gender inequality:

Works both ways

A lot of cultures are dominated by men (Western society as well)

Stereotypes based on gender(sex)

Examples:

Men make more money doing the same jobs as women.

Women often win custody battles much more easily.

Men are strong and women are weak.

Men can't show emotions

Who do you think has a better chance of becoming a sergeant in the army? A man or a woman? Why?

Not a lot of dads stay at home to take care of the kids. Why do you think that is?

Inequality in 'merits'

Merit is something you have achieved (diploma, degree, rank)

More merits often means better reputation

A doctor is seen as better than a plumber

Easier to get a bank loan with a good education

Cheaper insurance for educated people

Knowledge is valued very highly in our society

"Lawyers are always more intelligent than car mechanics." Do you agree or disagree? Briefly explain why.

"I think my parents would be disappointed if I became a bus driver." Agree or disagree? Briefly explain why.
