am/are/is + werkwoord + ing
als iets nu bezig of aan de gang is I am teaching a class at this moment. You are learning about the present continuous.
als iets in de toekomst gaat gebeuren en er zijn voorbereiding voor getroffen We are flying to Rome this Saturday. They are gettting married in a month.

am/are/is + werkwoord + ing
als je irritatie wilt uiten omdat iets altijd hetzelfde gaat They are always talking about him behind his back. You are constantly ignoring my calls.
Let op! Normaal gesproken gebruik je bij 'altijd' de simple present. Je gebruikt alleen de present continuous als er irritatie is! She always goes to work at 8 in the morning.

was/were + werkwoord + ing
als je wilt aangeven dat iets een tijdje in het verleden bezig was Last Saturday at 10 I was driving home. What were you doing at eight last night?
als je wilt aangeven dat iets in het verleden bezig was en werd onderbroken door iets anders I was walking home when you called me. They were having a party when their parents came home.

Present perfect continuous
have/has + been + werkwoord + ing
als iets in het verleden is begonnen en nog steeds bezig is en er is sprake van irritatie of de spreker vindt dat iets lang duurt. He has been working there since he was a teen. I have been waiting for you for over an hour!
als iets net is afgelopen, maar er moet worden benadrukt dat het een tijdje bezig is geweest She has been crying; her eyes are all red. You've been working too much, you are too tired.
