Negative questions

Ontkennende vragen

Negative questions (ontkennende vragen) gebruik je als je iets niet zeker weet, of omdat je je ergens aan ergert of over verbaast.

Isn't Jamal your brother?

Weren't you going to stop smoking?

Didn't Dad tell you he was going to be late?

Als er een vorm van to be (am, is, are, was, were), have got, has got of een modal (hulpwerkwoord) als can in de zin staat:

-begin je daar de zin mee,

-zet je er n't achter,

-zet je het onderwerp erachter,

-en dan de rest van de zin.

Voorbeelden:

You were at school. > Weren't you at school?

Sam has got a question. > Hasn't Sam got a question?

Your brother can help you. > Can't your brother help you?

Make a negative question:
He threw keys.

1. Doesn't he throw keys?
2. Didn't he throw keys?
3. Throwed he not keys?

Make a negative question:
They / to live / in a house?

1. Live they in a house?
2. Do not they in a house?
3. Do they live in a house?
4. Don't they live in a house?

Make the negative question:
We saw Harry.

Make a negative question:
You can drive.

Maak een negative question.
I work at school.

1. Doesn't you work at school?
2. Don't you work at school?

Make a negative question:
They were happy.

Voor alle andere werkwoorden...

-gebruik je een ontkennende vorm van to do (don't, doesn't, didn't),

-begin je daar de zin mee,

-zet je het onderwerp erachter,

-dan het hele werkwoord (dus zonder -s of -ed),

-en dan de rest van de zin.

Voorbeelden:

You want something to drink. > Don't you want something to drink?

Tilly needs some help. > Doesn't Tilly need some help?

They left early. > Didn't they leave early?
