Par. 3.1 Theory A: The graph of a linear function
By the end of the lesson you should be able to draw the graph of a linear formula.

The graph of a linear function is a straight line.
To draw the graph, you make a table with three points.
The book says two, we make three. Just to be sure.

Slide 5 - Diapositive

How to draw a linear graph (copy!)
  1. Write down the formula
  2. Draw a table like this:
  3. Choose 0 for x, calculate y:
  4. Choose two different numbers for x and calculate y again
    for example:
  5. Draw a coordinate plane (a.k.a. set of axes)
  6. Plot the three points
  7. Draw a straight line through the three points.

Slide 6 - Diapositive

  1. Describe a linear formula
  2. Give an example of a linear formula
  3. Explain the steps to take when asked to draw a linear formula

Slide 8 - Quiz

Let's draw one line of ex. 4 together
  • Write down the formula: y = 2x - 3
  • Make a tabel with x and y and three columns
  • Fill in 0 for the first x
  • Calculate y for x = 0
  • Choose two different values for x and calculate the y
  • Draw a coordinate plain
  • Plot the three points and draw the straight line through them
