to get – to know

Grammar: used to

- beschrijft situaties in het verleden die nu niet meer zo zijn

- In het Nederlands: 'vroeger'

Rules:

• Used to kan achter elke persoonsvorm
• Achter used to komt altijd het hele werkwoord. 

examples:

I used to have a dog. 

We used to live in the UK.

She used to be a teacher.

Questions and negations

Bij vragen en ontkenningen gebruik je did en didn't. 

Let op: er komt dan geen dan geen -d meer achter use:

Did you use to be a soldier?

Did there use to be a playground here?

He didn't use to be so handsome!

My grandparents didn't use to have a car. 

Grammar: conjunctions

Conjunctions zijn voegwoorden. Je gebruikt ze om 2 zinnen samen te voegen. 

Ze hebben verschillende functies:

1. So

So = dus

Gebruik je bij een logisch gevolg

There was no food in the house so I went to the supermarket.

It was very cold so she wore a warm coat. 

It started to rain so I got my umbrella from the car. 

2. or

or = of

Gebruik je voor een keuze:

Would you like pizza or pasta? 

We start now or do it later today.  

3. and 

and = en

Gebruik je voor een opsomming:

At school we have to learn English, French and German.

In the fall break I'm going to visit Amsterdam and The Hague. 

4. because

because = daarom/omdat

gebruik je voor een reden of oorzaak

I'm going to sleep because I'm really tired.

They were celebrating because they won the game.

5. but

but = maar

gebruik je bij een tegenstelling

I love dogs but  I'm not very fond of cats. 

I want to call him but I don't have his number
