The Rock

Alcatraz, also known as ‘The Rock’, was once the most secure prison in America. Because it was on an island, people thought the prisoners could never escape. But, back in 1962, three bank robbers spent months digging a tunnel from their cells. They made a boat out of raincoats and managed to escape from the island.

These days, Alcatraz is a museum and one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco, California. On the museum tour you can learn about the history of the island and even see the cells of the escaped prisoners. The three men were never seen again. Whether they survived and made it to land, or died in the water is still an exciting mystery. What do you think happened?
