Als je in het Engels van twee zelfstandige naamwoorden (nouns) één woord maakt (een samenstelling), doe je dat meestal door er een spatie tussen te zetten. Het eerste deel geeft vaak extra informatie over het tweede deel.

Which HYPHENATED compound nouns do you know?

Soms schrijf je een streepje tussen twee woorden. Dat doe je in de volgende gevallen:

• Bij getallen tussen de 20 en de 100 als je ze voluit schrijft; twenty-four, fifty-seven. Dit geldt niet voor de tientallen: thirty, forty, enzovoort.
• Bij leeftijden, gewichten, tijden en afstanden vóór een zelfstandig naamwoord: a 12-year-old boy, a 10-ton lorry, a 12-hour flight, a 5-mile race.
• Om te voorkomen dat een woord verkeerd gelezen wordt: pre-existing.
• Er zijn ook woorden waar geen regel voor is. Die moet je gewoon uit je hoofd leren. Twijfel je? Zoek het woord dan op in een woordenboek.

A column is a recurring piece or article in a newspaper, magazine or other publication, where a writer expresses their own opinion in few columns allotted to them by the newspaper organisation.
