Past simple = verleden tijd 
In NL: Ik dans, gisteren ______ ik

+ te(n) / de(n)

En soms 'sterk' werkwoord. (irregular)
vandaag zoek ik, gister ______ ik.  (worden, zitten, rijden)

But sometimes (irregular): Today I go, yesterday I _______
(also: drive, sit, swim, forget, etc. )

Option 1: start with --> was/were
Were we late for school that day? Was I supposed to bring food?

Option 2: start with a modal verb --> could (or ... )
Could you bring some food, please?

Option 3: start with did (+ full verb, hele werkwoord) 
Did you know that she got a 10 for English? Did you see that show last night?

Negations, past simple
Examples: I was late for school --> I was not late for school. 

Option 1: wasn't  / weren't 

Option 2: modals = couldn't / shouldn't / ... 

Option 3: didn't + full verb (hele werkwoord)

Let op!
A negation is not a question!
This means that you can build it like normal sentence. 

Yes! --> My sister wasn't at work today. She was ill. 
No! --> Wasn't my sister at work today? 

You only have to do that if you need a negation and a question.
