The SEND Code of practice 2015 is guidance document used to state the statutory guidance Early Years settings and Educational facilities have to follow in order to ensure inclusivity.

Key facts 

The SEND code of practice 2015 was heavily influenced by the Children & families act 2014. 

The intention was the requirements of both legislations together would unite to form better inclusion and equality. 

Both legislations support: 

- The local offer 

- Services across education and health care

- The requirements for EHCP 

- Children's rights in education 

- Focus on preparing for adult hood

5 stages of speech emergence for additional language

Simultaneous language 

Sequential language learning 

This type of language occurs when a child is learning two language at the exact same time. 1 parent may speak English and the other may speak French.

This type of language occurs when children and young people learn English after they have already developed their home language.

The early production stage for additional language is...

1. When children develop some language skills they begin to say key words and phrases. "Thank you"
2. When children no longer have set phrases and begin to have a go at communicating.
4. When children begin to point at objects as a form of communication

During the speech emergence
stage children have good

How might this be different for someone with
EAL?

Intermediate fluency & code switching 

In this young stage children become very confident in their abilities to communicate. 

When children learn more than 1 language on occasions they will begin to code switch, this means they may be speaking in English but then use a word from a different language.
