De 's geeft bezit of eigenaarschap van iets aan. 
Bijvoorbeeld: John's car.

Niet verwarren met sommige meervouden in het Nederlands zoals pinda -> pinda's

Naast de 's kan je ook het woord  of  gebruiken om bezit of eigenaarschap te gebruiken.

The name of the ship.

We gebruiken 's als het gaat om een persoon, dier, land of organisatie:
- That is Thomas's bike.
- The dog's bowl is green.
En anders gebruiken we of :
- Corner of the street.
