• In 1588, it was decided to establish the Republic of the Seven United Provinces.
• In 1648 Spain finally regocnised The Republic with the Treaty of Munster
• --> The Golden Age.

• Holland and Zeeland brought cheap grain from the Baltic Sea area.
• They exported milk, cheese and butter as well as craft products such as textiles. 
• Eventually Amsterdam became the new staple market

- VOC had a trade monopoly in Asia

Since the VOC was a government company, it had special rights. The VOC was allowed to:

-Wage war.

-Build fortresses.

-Sign treaties and trade agreements.
