Learning Goal: You will know what a reading strategy is

And you will know how to use this and find your own strategy.

Before reading

  Establish a purpose for reading. (in your case assignments and exams)
Identify and discuss difficult words, phrases, and concepts in the text.
Preview the text (by surveying the title, illustrations, and unusual text structures) to make predictions about its content.

During reading

Skimming: read the text briefly to get a general idea. You do not read every word but you skip difficult or unknown words. Read the firsts sentence of every paragraph.

Scan: look for specific information, for example the price of something, a year or a name. You do not have to read the rest of the text.
Look at the picture and all we need to know is the price!
