Before reading

  Establish a purpose for reading. (in your case assignments and exams)
Identify and discuss difficult words, phrases, and concepts in the text.
Preview the text (by surveying the title, illustrations, and unusual text structures) to make predictions about its content.

Skimming: read the text briefly to get a general idea. You do not read every word but you skip difficult or unknown words. Read the firsts sentence of every paragraph.
