TALK TIME
In groups of 4 discuss the question in the handout
Then discuss the following:
  • Is it important as a nurse to show empathy  to a patient? 
  • How can a nurse show empathy? 
  • How important is a nurse's body language in showing empathy towards a patient? (think about body movements, how you stand, facial expressions, tone of voice etc)

use WH- questions (what, why, when, where and how.

What does a "good" conversation look like?

2. Luisteren naar elkaar
3. Oordelen uitstellen
4. Evenveel aan het woord zijn
5. Inhoudelijk en interpreterend de diepte ingaan

Vragen stellen: stel je klasgenoten vragen over wat ze zeggen, denken, vinden, hebben er-
varen, en vraag door: waarom is dat zo?

Luisteren naar elkaar: wat zegt een ander nu precies? Laat elkaar uitpraten.

Oordelen uitstellen: houd je mening even binnenboord. Kun je ook een alternatief beden-
ken voor je eerste gedachte?

Evenveel aan het woord zijn: zorg dat iedereen aan het woord komt. Gebruik vragen om ie-
dereen bij het gesprek te betrekken.

Inhoudelijk en interpreterend de diepte ingaan: zorg dat het gesprek écht ergens over gaat
(de taak die je krijgt helpt daarbij). Is er meer over je leeservaring te zeggen dan spannend,
saai of leuk? Stuur het gesprek terug naar de inhoud als jullie afdwalen.

What do I need to do now?          
  1. Read the text again (individually)
  2. Look at what you wrote down last week (individually).
  3. Discuss the text together (come up with your OWN questions as well)









Ask your fellow student at least the following questions:
1. How do you feel after reading the text again? Explain why.
2. Look at your notes of last week, would you change anything? Explain why yes or no. 
3. What do you think of Hazel in the text? 
4. Do you see any resemblance between hazel and you or someone in your surroundings?

Role play
  • You will get a role card.
  • Read it carefully and don't show it to ANYONE!
  • Look at your role card, and write how you as a nurse would react in that situation.



EXAMPLE
Rolecard: "The patient doesn't want to eat any food". 
My reaction as a nurse: "Sir, you have to eat! You need to get well and eating will make you stronger. Would you at least eat the mashed potatoes? "

Role play 
What do you need to do in pairs?
  • You will play the role of the card that you received. (so you are the patient!)
  • Your classmate will be the nurse (He/She will have to react to the patient).
