What is the difference between the future continuous and the present continuous?
the present continuous is used to talk about social or work plans, normally used with a future time reference.

What are you doing this weekend?  -  I am fixing the roof.

The future continuous tense is used to suggest that a future event will be in progress over a limited period of time in the future.

I will be spending one or two weeks in France.

Academic/formal writing
To change the focus
When who or what causes the action is unknown or unimportant or obvious or 'people in general'

Ex. The police arrested him - He was arrested (by the police)

When: an event took place in the past before another past event 
Passive: had been + past participle 

past perfect: 
The police had never arrested me before I went to that party        
past perfect passive:
I had never been arrested before I went to that party
