Welcome to HAVO 4 Period 1 English!
In this period, we are going to focus on reading a novel, speaking about the novel, and listening skills.

Speaking about Books
For your speaking test, it is important to be able to describe how the main character changes from the beginning of the book and the end. This is called character development.

Another word for main character is protagonist.
The person or thing working against the main character is called the antagonist.

Character development
In iBoy, there are many challenges to develop Tom's character. YA novels, like almost all works of fiction, are focused on character development. The person we meet at the beginning of the book changes in some way by the end of the book. The things that change the character are described by the events, people, or situations in the story. These all force the character to make choices and take action.

Plot Development
For your speaking test, it is important to be able to describe what conflict of problem the main character has to solve in the story. The things that the main character does to solve the problem is called the plot development
By solving all the problems and obstacles, the person changes. So plot development is related to character development.

Conflict drives the story development. The conflict can come from:

  1. Other people
  2. Himself (feeling conflict inside, guilt, worry, etc)
  3. Organisations/authority (police, doctors, etc)
  4. Nature (natural disasters like floods, electricity shortages, lightening, earthquake, etc.)

iBoy is  a novel written by Kevin Brooks in 2010. It was filmed in and around East-Central London, in particular the Middlesex Street Estate. It has been called  science fiction since the plot revolves around an imaginary situation involving technology.

The Power of Love 
But perhaps maybe the strongest influence Tom feels in making the choices that he makes is love.
At the beginning of the book, he has a secret crush on Lucy, and throughout the book he does everything he can to make her life easier. For a while he pretends to be somebody else, but in the end he wins her heart by just being himself.
