Passive & Active sentences
Welke zin is "active" en welke zin is "passive"?

  1. Donald ate the cookies.
  2. The cookies were eaten.

Active (bedrijvend, doet de actie):
Het onderwerp doet iets - John  wrote a letter.

Passive (lijdend, ondergaat de actie):
Het onderwerp doet niets - A letter was written by John.

Usage (gebruik)
  • Om de nadruk te leggen op wat er gebeurt, niet op wie wat doet.
  • Als het onbekend is wie de actie doet.

Vb 1: The test was graded by the teacher. (niet belangrijk welke docent.)
Vb 2: The test was graded. (rara door wie?)

Hoe maak je de passive?
Vorm van to be (was/were) + voltooid deelwoord.
Past simple: Jack built a house.
Passive past simple: A house was built by Jack

Indirect speech
  • Verleden tijd - je herhaalt iets wat al gezegd is.
  • Soms moet je het persoonlijk voornaamwoord aanpassen.

Bijvoorbeeld: We all really want a cat at home.
(Indirect speech): They said they all really wanted a cat at home.

Voorbeelden van modals:
can, could, might, may, 

Je kunt ook modal + have + voltooid deelwoord hebben
Vb: You could have done that already.

Task: Jack the Ripper Murder Report
You're going to do your own research into who Jack the Ripper might be. You make a short report about it. There must be a number of elements in your report.
 
Title page:       The title page is the first page (front page) of your report.
Title:                     At the very top is the title of the report in large letters.
Image:                 Below the title is an image.
Name:                  First and last name of yourself and people you have worked with.
Class:                   State which class you are in
School, subject and teacher
 
Research question
Is (name) Jack the Ripper?

You make your hypothesis based on the information you have been given over the past minority. 
Look for this in your book and in the assignments you have made online.
