Today's goal 

- I can form questions and negations with main verbs and auxiliary verbs. 

Questions and negations 

Oftewel vragen en ontkenningen. 

Basisregel 

Een vraag maak je door de persoonsvorm vóór het onderwerp te zetten. 

Een ontkenning maak je door "not" achter het hulpwerkwoord dat persoonsvorm is te zetten.

Hoofdwerkwoorden: 

Zelfstandige werkwoorden, die aangeven wat er gebeurt. Ze kunnen alleen in een zin staan, of met hulpwerkwoorden. 

I play tennis 

I can play tennis 

We speak English 

We must speak English

He spends a lot of money

He shouldn't spend so much money

Hulpwerkwoorden of het koppelwerkwoord be 

Een hulpwerkwoord komt alleen voor in combinatie met een zelfstandig werkwoord. 

I can play the piano

We might join you

We should be more serious 

Het koppelwerkwoord "to be" volgt in vragen en ontkenningen de regels van hulpwerkwoorden. 

I am happy

You are sad 

Waarom is dit belangrijk? 

Een vraag of een ontkenning bevat in het Engels ALTIJD een hulpwerkwoord, of een vorm van het werkwoord "to be". 

Als er een hulpwerkwoord in de zin staat, gebruik je dat in de ontkenning of vraag.

Als er geen hulpwerkwoord staat, voeg je een vorm van het werkwoord "to do" toe. Dit wordt persoonsvorm. Daardoor wordt het oorspronkelijke werkwoord niet meer vervoegd. 

Met een hulpwerkwoord: 

He can play the piano

Can he play the piano? 

He can't play the piano.

We must listen to the teacher. 

Must we listen to the teacher?

We mustn't listen to the teacher  

They were happy

Were they happy? 
They weren't happy 

Met alleen een zelfstandig werkwoord: 

He plays the violin

Does he play the violin? 
He doesn't play the violin 

She went to the market

Did she go to the market? 

She didn't go to the market.

Questions	to be or auxiliary verb (can/may) at the beginning of a question	with any main verb add the verb to do at the beginning of a question
negations	to be or aux verb + not (n't)	place not (n't) after the verb to do

Make negative:
They saw the movie last night.

Make negative:
He could swim when he was little.

Make a question:
They can join us later.

Make a question:
They drove to Italy.

Make a question:
He sees things that aren't there.

Make negative:
They were very nice to me.

Make a question:
He's good at English.
