Introduction p 71
Listen and complete the gaps:
The Luddites got their name from a likely fictional worker named Ned Ludd. According to the story, he spontaneously smashed a knitting machine after being told by a supervisor to correct how he was using it. However, there is no evidence that this leader of the Luddites ever existed, despite authorities at the time doing their best to locate him. Additionally, the story of Ned Ludd was told for the first time in 1847, while the Luddite movement began much earlier in 1811. What is a Luddite? Luddite has been used as an adjective since its inception, but in the 1960s, luddite became a general adjective used to refer to anyone who opposes technological progress and automation.
