  • Madeline responds that she is fine and when her mother asks if it is the new neighbors that are distracting Madeline, she tells her the first lie of her life and says that she is engulfed in a new novel.

offering their mother a Bundt cake, which she turns down.

  • Olly asks if her daughter is available to show him and his sister around,
but Madeline’s mother just says she cannot see them and shuts the door.

  • “First Contact” opens with Madeline hearing tapping at her window and looking outside to see Olly across from her with the still-intact Bundt cake on the window sill with eyes pasted onto it. As the cake hurls from the windowsill, Madeline can see it is still intact.

  • “Night Two” describes another night where Madeline ignores the pinging at her window.

  • In “Night Six,” Olly has rigged an IV line to the Bundt cake, takes a stethoscope to it, and shakes his head, indicating the cake will not survive.
  • “Night Seven” describes Olly in the window performing last rites on the Bundt cake.
  • Olly writes an email address in black marker to show to Madeline.
  • In “First Contact, Part Two” Madeline begins a message to genericuser033@gmail.com.
  • In her email, Madeline introduces herself and asks what Olly’s name is (although she already knows it from watching the family next door).
