Chronology
The arrangement of events or dates in the order of their occurrence.

Flashbacks interrupt the chronological order of the main narrative to take a reader back in time to the past events in a character’s life.

Flashforward is a literary device in which the plot goes ahead of time

First, let's look at what actually happens:

Create a story arch on the plot itself (external)

The buggy is empty

He feels anxious and is hesitating to do something. He feels incompetent. 
Inciting incident
He wants nothing to do with the buggy, he's anxious
Rising action/crisis
Remember his life and feels he doesn't live anymore
Climax
Wave of emotions washes over him: "relieved, disappointed, angry and delighted to be angry"
Falling action
Wants the mother to not see him as a pityful old man
Resolution
"Never felt happier": he feels alive again
