TWO most important listening strategies

1. Underline key words in the answers and focus on its synonyms while listening.

Step 1: Introduction (Dutch)
  • Find out the main topic.
  • They tell you in Dutch!

Step 2: Introduction (English)
  • Get used to the speakers' voices and accents;
  • Confirm main topic and listen for extra information;
  • Focus on picking up key words.

  • Keep main topic in mind;
  • focus on key words;
  • Identify positives and negatives in the answers.

Step 4: Listen for key info and link ABC
  • If you want: Take notes related to the key words;
  • Keep in mind the main gist (de grote lijn); What they mention the most often is usually the right answer. 
  • You are allowed to write on a piece of paper during the test!

  • Elimination: which answer can you cross off?
  • Compare positives and negative answers to what you heard.

  • Focus on main gist when using other footage;
  • Watch and listen to as many materials as possible:
  • Podcasts (BBC The Why Factor, New York Times Daily); the news (CNN10, BBC Newsround); programmes (BBC Panorama); documentaries; British Netflix series.
