A conditional (or if sentence) is a sentence in which a condition is given. We use these sentences to talk about uncertain events and situations. A condition is given that needs to happen before something else happens.

First conditional

Used to talk about situations, present or future, that are likely to happen.

 

If you don’t behave well in class, the teacher will send you away

I will win if we play tennis

 

Second conditional

Used to talk about unreal and unlikely situations in the present and the future.

If I won the lottery, I would move to Iceland.

Even if she gave up, she would still win.
