Before Miss Salehar moved to the Netherlands she lived in Slovenia and Belgium. In Belgium she was a nanny to three boys. Even after leaving, she has kept in contact with them. For the past 2 years she has been living in Eindhoven. Before she got a job as a teacher she worked at Pullman hotel in Eindhoven but since the fall of 2020 she has been an English teacher at a Dutch high school. She has enjoyed working here for the past 3 years. During her breaks she likes to travel. She has visited many places around Europe in the past few years, however, she has never been to South America. It has been on her bucket list!

If you want to say something that happened
5 minutes ago, yesterday, 5 years ago, in 1994, a Century ago...
you use PAST SIMPLE tense


=BEVESTIGENDE ZIN:

- The students went home early yesterday.
- PSV won the match last night.
VRAGENDE EN ONTKENNENDE:
 Did the lesson start 5 minutes ago?
 The students didn't go home early yesterday.

2. PRESENT PERFECT

1. Past Simple and Continuous
  • Can you see a difference in the meaning of these two sentences?
    1. When the guests arrived, Jane was cooking dinner.
    2. When the guests arrived, Jane cooked dinner.

  • In the first one, Jane started cooking dinner before the guests arrived. We know that because it uses the past continuous. In the second sentence, the guests arrived first and then Jane started cooking.

CONTINUOUS ->
Emphasizes that something was happening for a LONGER time.

1. When one action interrupted another.
I was walking to school when I suddenly saw an accident.
2. When we want to specify an event was taking longer
