Week 26, Lesson 3

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Today
recap some<>any, modal verbs and wh-questions

Self-Test of the above

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Your goals
After this lesson I can make

- sentences with some or any;
- sentences with the right modal verb;
- sentences with the proper WH-question word.

Slide 3 - Diapositive

First,
some...<>any...

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Do you see that we make a distinction between questions and their suspected answers?
Vorig jaar maakten we nog geen onderscheid tussen vragen met een ander antwoord. Toen gebruikten we gewoon altijd any.
Maar dit is eigenlijk niet helemaal correct:
Als je een vraag stelt waarop je "Ja" als antwoord verwacht, dan gebruik je some.
Als je een vraag stelt waarop je "Nee" als antwoord verwacht of echt niet weet welk antwoord je zult krijgen, dan gebruik je any.

2 other examples
The fridge is open and you see that there is cheese in it and you haven't been arguing with your mother, so you expext her to be nice. Then you ask: "Can I have some cheese, please?" You expect her to answer "Yes, of course".
When you ask a random person on the street "Do you have any gold with you?" you expect him/her to answer "No, I don't".

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Secondly,
The modal verbs

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Modal verbs
Once you get the hang of it, modal verbs are easy.
must, have to and should can be confusing (see next slide).

However, the other modal verbs (could and would) are easy if you know how to translate the sentence because they simply mean zou(den) kunnen en zou(den) ... (elk werkwoord).
Or couldnt't zou(den) niet kunnen and wouldn't zou(den) niet...

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Last but not least...
WH-questions

Slide 12 - Diapositive

WH-questions
Who? = Wie?
Whose? = Van wie?
Where? = Waar?
When? = Wanneer?
Why? = Waarom?
How? = Hoe?
These are easy, right?

Slide 13 - Diapositive

WH-questions
There are two wh-question words that can be confusing:
What? and Which?

We use "what" if the choice is infinite
= onbeperkt aantal keuzes
We use "which" if the number of choices is set
= beperkt aantal keuzes

Slide 14 - Diapositive

WH-questions
For example:
What is your favourite colour?
= onbeperkt aantal keuzes

Which colour do you like best: red or blue?
= beperkt aantal keuzes

Slide 15 - Diapositive

Practice makes perfect
Go to eDition, Unit 6, Self-Test and do F-H

Did you score less than 70%? > Do the corresponding grammar excerise(s) in Catch Up first (Unit 6 > Catch Up)

Scored higher than 70%? > Well done, you can already move on to the next slide

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Look back
This lessen you perfected your skills
-  to make make sentences with some or any;
- to make sentences with the proper modal verbs;
- to make questions with the proper WH-question words.

However, again, if you have any questions or feel insecure about grammar we dealt with today, feel free to contact me!

Look forward (1/2)
We have finished Units 1 till 6!

Which means that from now on the online lessons will mainly focus on skills: reading, writing and listening.
The "offline" lessons will centre on repeating some grammar we dealt with the past year.

Slide 18 - Diapositive

Look forward (2/2)
Next week, the online lessons are all about writing a film review.

How about the offline class? I have to think about that one.
