NL migration country
After 1945: Arrival of many immigrants in NL:
Why?
- Colonies become independent, unrest and fear of coups --> arrival of Surinamese and Indonesians.
- Economic growth from the 1960s onwards --> labour shortage: solution --> Guest workers
After 1945 more wars in the world --> refugees leave motherland in search of safety.

Former colonies
The Netherlands had a number of colonies --> the Dutch East Indies and Suriname and the Antilles.
Yet many inhabitants fled to the Netherlands because of
Power seizure by the army
Fear of oppression
Economic decline
Integration was fast because they already knew the Dutch
culture already knew. Indonesians easy, Surinamese
slightly more difficult because of dissatisfaction with independence

Integration
  • Originally guest workers were supposed to go back to country of origin
  • No attempt made to integrate or learn Dutch language
  • When it turned out that families also came to the Netherlands, this had to change (family reunification)
  • Integration process started

Slide 9 - Diapositive

NL migration country
  • Arrival in Europe/Netherlands: Asylum application.
  • Asylum is only given to refugees at risk in their own country. Think war, natural disasters, dictatorship.
  • People fleeing for economic reasons cannot apply for asylum and have no right to stay.

Tensions in society
  • Attacks around the world increased fear towards Muslims.
  • PVV gave voice to this fear and openly campaigned against the multicultural society from 2004 onwards
  • Also makes people less likely to integrate
