Modals:     CAN / COULD / MUST / HAVE TO / SHOULD

Answer:

Vincent's broken arm should heal quickly.
Should = used to give advice

If you do it wrong, exercise can be unhealthy.
Can = Can is used to talk about possibility and ability

James must / should watch what he eats to lose some weight.

Must = used say that an action needs to be done (obligation). 

Should = used to give advice, say that something is the right thing to do, or make a suggestion.

  1. Look at the picture.
  2. You are at the hospital
  3. Imagine you are 2 of the characters, write what the doctor has told/advised you to do.
  4. Use one modal verb for each sentence:

                        CAN / COULD / MUST / HAVE TO / SHOULD

What is it?
  • something that happened in the past
  • it is continuing to the present 
  • there is  connection between the past and now.

What words make the present perfect:
'have / has'    (+)     past participle

What is it?
The present perfect is used to say that something happened in the past and continues in the present.

runny nose

Because:
  • The word to sprain happens when someone falls and injures their ankle or wrist.
  • The word bruise is a blue or brown mark on the skin. It happens when someone sprain's their ankle or wrist.
  • The word runny nose is when you get a cold or flu. It has nothing to do with a sprained ankle or a bruise.
Which word does not belong?
                   to lie down       -       stomach ache        -    crutches


Task:
  1. Choose 1 word that does not belong.
  2. Explain why it does not belong.
  3. Write an English sentence using the 2 words that do belong

Because:
  • To lie down means to lie flat on something
  • Stomach ache is when your stomach hurts and you experience pain
  • Crutches is used when you have broken or injured your leg or foot. Crutches has nothing to do with stomach pain and lying down.

Because: 
  • the word dentist is a profession in the healthcare
  • waiting room is where a patient waits to be seen by the dentist. 
  • The word vacation is about going on holiday and has nothing to do with healthcare.
