The preposition of a place tells us something about the direction that a person or object is (moving) in. 

Between = tussen 2 dingen/mensen

Among = onder de mensen

The milk is in the glass.

The milk is poured into the glass.

The meteor is heading towards the earth.

The airplane is moving away from us.
