When to use the tense?
1. When something started in the past and continues into the present
       Lisa has been my friend for five years now.
       How long have you known each other? 
2. When something has just finished.
       She has just walked in the door. 
       The door has been painted, the paint is still wet. 
3. When something happened in the past, but it is not clear when
       I have read your email.
       We have visited France.

When to use the tense?
1. When something started in the past and continues into the present and you want to emphasize that it has been going on for a long time (emphasis on duration) 
       We’ve been playing for hours and still the game isn’t over.
       We’ve been partying since 11 p.m.
2. When something was going on for quite some time and has just finished
       She has been crying. Her eyes are still wet.
       I’ve been running. I’m exhausted.
