In rich countries the cities are spread out over the country. In poor countries they are quite often at the coast

In the poorest countries you can often find a primate city.
This is a city that is much larger than the number two city of that country.

How does the urban pattern change?
  • You can see how much of the population of a country lives in cities by looking at the degree of urbanisation.

  • The annual growth of the degree of urbanisation is calles the urbanisation pace.  --> in developing countries this is higher.
  •  Since 1970 millions of people have been migrating from the rural areas to the city (urbanisation), especially in Asia and Africa
  •  These are mostly young people who are looking for a better future in the city. Besides the large settlement surplus, natural population growth is therefore the main reason why the urban population in less economically developed countries is growing so fast.
