Wat is congruentie?

Het onderwerp van een zin moet altijd corresponderen met de persoonsvorm. Als dat niet gebeurt, maak je een congruentiefout.

EN: singular/plural

 

Voorbeeld enkelvoudig:

Marie plays the piano.

My sisters are always fighting.

Twee onderwerpen verbonden met and wordt meervoud.    1 en 1 = 2 

My sister and her boyfriend are going to the park.

Twee enkelvoudige onderwerpen verbonden met either ....or/ neither .... nor krijgen een enkelvoudige persoonsvorm

Either Jack or Jill is going to run down the hill.  (1 van de 2)

Neither Jack or Jill is going to run down the hill.  (geen van beide)

Let op!

Het woord police is in het Engels altijd meervoud.

The police are looking for the thief.

Is het woord enkelvoud of meervoud?

Schoolvakken (maths) - enkelvoud

Gymnastics and aerobics - enkelvoud

Measles (mazelen) - enkelvoud

News - enkelvoud

Is het woord enkelvoud of meervoud?

Dingen die uit twee delen bestaan zijn altijd meervoud, zoals:

Binoculars, tweezers, glasses, pants, trousers, earphones, knickers, jeans. 

Je zou er 'a pair of' voor kunnen zetten. 

A pair of jeans.

Voorbeelden:

I have got new sunglasses. Do you like them?

maar 

Maths is my favourite subject.

Either Mary or Katy (is / are) coming to the party, but not both of them.
