Periode 2:

Week 2
Introduction of a personal consultation

First, think of a product or service you would like to ask advice about. You will make a telephone call to the adviser. Then prepare the introduction of your conversation. Your conversation should be brief, but it should at least contain the elements on the right.

You don't have to discuss the advice itself, just practise the start of the conversation with each other. Once you're finished, switch roles.

-Greet the adviser;
- Introduce yourself and/or your company;
- Ask if now is a good time to call;
- Explain the subject you are calling about;
- Ask for advice.
The adviser is the first one to speak, by answering the phone. As the adviser, you should:
- Introduce yourself and/or your company;
- Greet the caller;
- Answer the caller's question about the time to call;
- Let the caller know you understand what s/he is calling about.
- Ask the caller how you can help.

Finally, pair up with a classmate and have your conversation.

Make sure you speak slowly and loud enough.

Week 3: Giving instructions

When you give instructions in a conversation, you explain to someone how they should do something.
Some examples:
You explain to a colleague how to fix a computer problem.
You explain to a customer how to use a product they bought.
You explain to a trainee how the time registration system works.
You explain to a student how they can register for a course.
When you give instructions, the conversation has the following organisation. (Of course, the word 'colleague' below can be replaced by 'customer', 'client', 'trainee', etc.).

Introduction: The instructor determines what their colleague already knows.
Body: The instructor briefly explains what their colleague should do, and why. The instructor gives clear, step-by-step instructions. The instructor describes and demonstrates each step, making sure their colleague is able to see everything clearly. The instructor checks if everything is clear and recaps the steps.
The colleague executes the instructions, identifying each step. The colleague asks questions if anything is unclear. The instructor gives help, if necessary.
The instructor gives feedback and gives additional instructions. The instructor shows appreciation for their colleague's efforts.
Conclusion: The instructor checks if everything is clear. The colleague says how they thought it went. The colleague asks for further explanation, if necessary.
