Past simple

What was the rule again? (regular verbs + irregular verbs)

When do we use it? 

We (to help) our neighbour last week.

My family (to arrive) at the airport last night.

They (to stop) at the stop sign.

He (to wash) the vegetables before cooking.

The class (to enjoy) the lesson.

Questions in Past

Rule 1

- was/were of andere auxiliary (could/would/may/might) aan het begin van de zin zetten + vraagteken. 

Rule 2

- Bij ALLE werkwoorden mag je did vooraan de zin zetten + onderwerp en werkwoord omdraaien + vraagteken achteraan

Rule 3 

- als je een vraagwoord gebruikt (who/what/which/where/when/how) komt die vooraan in de zin te staan.  

Negations in Past simple

Rule 1

- was/were of andere auxiliary (could/would/may/might) + not (n't)

Rule 2

- Met alle andere werkwoorden kan je didn't voor het (hoofd)werkwoord zetten 

I ____ (not / drink) any beer last night.

What ______ (he / give) his mother for Christmas?

_________ (he / call) you?

I ______ (not / change) trains at Victoria.

Past simple 

Was/were + stam + ing

Gebruik:

Als je een activiteit aan wil geven die een langere tijd geduurd heeft en al gestopt is. 

She _________ (bring) some chocolates to the party.

We _________ (use) to dress up for Halloween.

They _________ (look) very nice yesterday.

I __________ (forget) to buy some milk.

Past simple vs past continuous

Een langere gebeurtenis onderbroken door een korte actie.

Past simple zin wordt vaak aangekondigd door : when

Past continuous wordt vaak aangekondigd door : while, as

We suddenly_______ that we ________ in the wrong direction.(REALISE, DRIVE)

While the children _________ with others my husband and I ____________ to have a cup of coffee.(PLAY, DECIDE)

Have to (others)	To say something is necessary, no other option. ex: You have to stop at a stop sign.
Should (others)	To say something is a good idea, nut not necessary. ex: You should study before a test.
Must (yourself)	To strongly advice to do something ex: I must clean my room, it's a mess.

Plaats in de zin: na het onderwerp. In een vraagzin voor.
