Verb + -ing  

like- love- enjoy- hate- finish- stop-->  swimming/ walking etc

Verb + to + infinitive

choose- decide- need-would like --> to dance/ to work etc

Verb + preposition + -ing (!!!)

think of- looking forward to --> going/ seeing/ talking

We decided .... (buy) a new car.

They've got some work .... (do).

Peter gave up .... (smoke) .

He'd like ... (fly) an aeroplane.

I enjoy ... (write) picture postcards.

Avoid .... (make) silly mistakes.

I dream about ... (build) a big house.

I'm looking forward to ... (see) you.

He loves ... (cook) for us.

I would love ... (cook) for us tonight.

Do you understand the difference?

I'd like to cook for us. --> intention

I like cooking for us. --> general enjoyment
