The

Als je in het Nederlands de lidwoorden de of het voor een zelfstandig naamwoord zet, dan gebruik je in het Engels het lidwoord the. 

Dit lidwoord is het bepaalde lidwoord, dat altijd naar iets specifieks verwijst (the bike = de fiets).

Bij instellingen als hospital, school, prison, college, university, church gebruik je geen 'the' als je denkt aan het gebruik van de gebouwen, en niet aan de gebouwen zelf. 

Ook bij straatnamen, jaargetijden en maaltijden wordt het lidwoord meestal weggelaten

He is in hospital now.

I live on Sloterkade 167 in Amsterdam.

I am going for lunch now. 

Je gebruikt wel "the" als je echt het gebouw bedoelt: 

She had been wandering around the hospital all night.
