You are going to write an essay of 250-300 words in which you explore the pros and cons of being in a traditional job. The essay has to have a thesis like 'Would ... be the career for me?' and explore different aspects (both positive and negative) of having such a job.
Look at p. 16 of your student file. Assignment 49. Read along!

Step 1: Focus on the job
First, take a look at the list => what job do you think sounds most interesting to you? You've got 1 minute to choose one. Of course, you're free to choose smth else which is not on the list!

Step 2a: The basics
Before doing your online research, you first need to think of the basics.
In Word (or another app), you need to create a 'plan', which contains the basics of your essay. The basics are: the thesis statement (look at example in your student file), the arguments (in this case, the (dis)advantages of this career you chose). You can do your research online, you don't have to think of everything yourself!

Step 2b: The basics
Your essay plan always contains the following:
- Title
- Thesis statement
- Introduction: what information are you giving your reader?
- Body: 2 paragraphs, each paragraph has the main points/arguments
- Conclusion: how will you wrap up your essay?
- Linking words: Firstly, secondly, in conclusion, for example, however, etc.

Step 3: The 'hamburger' structure
Your essay needs to be structured. We
always write in paragraphs, and each
paragraph has a purpose. For this essay,
you can decide to write 4/6 paragraphs!
(e.g.: introduction, body: 2 paragraphs
(or 4) & conclusion).

Step 4: Starting a paragraph
Your paragraph always needs to start with a topic sentence: your topic sentence is often your argument or main point/theme of the paragraph. As you write, you explain and give examples to prove your argument/support your main point/theme.

Step 5: Concluding your essay
Never (and we mean NEVER)
introduce new arguments or
points in your conclusion!
(Otherwise, it wouldn't be called
a conclusion)

You work on this assignment on your own (so no talking). You are allowed to do research on your laptop.
Before you hand in, check if your essay meets the criteria:
- A separate essay plan;
- Well-structured essay (see previous slide);
- A clear thesis-statement (make sure to underline this!);
- Whitelines between all paragraphs.
- 200-250 words;
- A title (which you can think of at the beginning, middle or end, as long as you have it!).
