'London was full of foxes roaming the streets at night. What is the function of this sentence. (paragraph 1)

It thrilled me when she was a fox like other foxes. Why does the narrator mention this? (2nd paragraph)

What's happening in paragraph 3? Is this any different to parents with human babies? Were your parents also like the mother? 

The mother sings & reads to Anya. Read the paragraph. Why has the author chosen to write about this?

I knew that no nursery would take her, no childminder. I couldn't bring myself to find a dog-walker. Anya was not a dog!
