Purposes of a text:
inform, instruct, persuade, entertain

Reading strategies:
- Scanning: specific information
- Skimming: topic and main points
- Intensive Reading: complete understanding

Topic: what the text is about.
Main idea:  the point the author is trying to make about the topic.
Topic sentence: sentence that clearly states the main idea. Usually the first or last sentence of a text/paragraph.

- Introduction: introduce the topic / capture the attention of the reader
- Body: presents various points of information, ideas, arguments
- Conclusion: can be many things ( summary, opinion, recommendation etc.)
