• Use 'can' when you need to say 'kan' (I can swim)
• Use 'could' when you need to say 'zou kunnen (I could help you if you want....?)
• Use could when wanting to be polite (beleefd)
• Use 'could' if the sentence is in the past tense (You could have left your keys in your room)
• Zou kunnen =  could, kan = can 

We use 'could' to be polite
