During this lesson you are going to practise the Stones and you will know when to use the right preposition of time.

Prepositions of time

At – This preposition of time is used to discuss clock times, holidays and festivals, and other very specific time frames including exceptions, such as “at night.”

On – This preposition of time is used to discuss certain days of the week or portions of days of the week, specific dates, and special days such as “on New Year’s Day.”

In – This preposition of time is used to discuss months, seasons, years, centuries, general times of day, and longer periods of time such as “in the past.”

At (very specific)

clock times: at 10 o'clock, at five past nine

holidays and festivals: at Christmas, at Easter

exceptions:at night, at the weekend

On (more specific)

Days of the week: on Monday, on Thursday

Portions of days of the week: on Thursday afternoon, on Sunday mornings

specific dates: on twelve October, on the fifteenth of December

special days: on Newyears' Eve, on Boxingday

In (general)

months: in January, in March

seasons: in the Winter, in Summer

years: in 2006

centuries: in the twentieth century, in the 19th century

general times of day: in the morning, in the afternoon

longer periods of time: in the nineties, in the past
