The underlined words are adjectives, and the bold words are adverbs. How can you recognise an adverb?

– At the beginning / end of an adverb, you see the letters ______

– An adjective usually says something about a noun / verb

– An adverb says something about a noun / verb

Adjectives & Adverbs

• Adjectives say someting about a noun

       Placed before the noun

                                         "The green dragon" / "the cute dog"

• Placed after verbs as: 

       to be, to seem, to appear, to look, to taste, to smell, to feel

       Placed after the verb

                                       "she sings beautifully" / "he speaks honestly"

• Add "-ly" to an adjective make an adverb

Exceptions:

Adverbs of Frequency

always, often, never, sometimes, usually, etc.

Adverbs of Frequency

• Placed before the verb!

I often talk about grammar. / We never go to church on Monday.

But:

• placed after a form of "to be"

She is usually at school at this time. / They are always messing around.
