als iets in het verleden gebeurd is en het is nog niet voorbij: I have worked for Jumbo for a year.
als iets in het verleden gebeurd is en het resultaat is nog merkbaar of belangrijk: She has broken her ankle. She cannot walk without crutches
als iets net voorbij is: I have just heard it.

als je extra nadruk wil leggen op hoe lang je al met een actie bezig bent.
De actie is hetgene wat belangrijk is, het resultaat niet.

Je doet dit als je wil overdrijven of geirriteerd bent.

Een bijvoeglijk naamwoord gebruik je ook na de volgende werkwoorden: 

to be, to become, to seem  (koppel ww) 
to feel , to smell , to sound , to taste, to look  (zintuigen)

1. Een bijwoord zegt iets over een werkwoord.
