Reported speech

When you report on what someone said

Say something that you like

Let's try

Pretend you are going to a dinner party

Come up with something that you would say at a party. For example: I’m sorry I’m late, these canapés are delicious,

Excuse me, I’m looking for my husband/wife.

Role play: Walk around as if you were at a party and talk to as many people as possible. Try to remember what others have said and talk about your own statement.

Report back on what other people told you, using reported speech!

Questions

"Have you ever worked abroad?" - He asked if I had ever worked abroad

NOT: He asked me had I ever..

WH- questions:

"When did you first arrive in the Netherlands?" - The student asked me when I had first arrived in the Netherlands.

Summarising verbs

There are a large number of verbs which summarise what people say, rather than report the exact words. These verbs are followed by various constructions. Some verbs have more than one construction. 

For example, Suggest is not used with an object (He suggested me to go.), it is followed by an -ing form or a that clause:

He suggested training hard

His coach suggested that she should stop

ex: He warned us that....

Verb + object + to + infinitive

Beg      order      advise     forbid      warn      ask      remind      persuade      tell

ex: He threatened to eat the apple

verb + ing form

Deny       recommend     suggest     admit    propose

ex: He admitted going to the club

verb + preposition + ing form
