Primary Sources
Primary sources are materials directly related to a topic by someone who witnessed the events or is from a time in history. These materials include letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs or artifacts.

Secondary Sources
People writing about historical events, people, objects, or ideas produce secondary sources because they help explain new or different positions and ideas about primary sources. These were written by someone who was not there at the time. Some examples of secondary sources are textbooks, presentations, documentaries, speeches, websites, blogs or books.

The archaeological record is the body of physical (not written) evidence about the past. Archaeologists search for new examples of history, such as buildings, artifacts, bones, burials, tombs and shipwrecks.

Rosetta Stone
This fragment was found at el-Rashid (Rosetta) in Egypt , hence its modern name: the Rosetta Stone.
It was dug up in 1799 by French soldiers of Napoleon Bonaparte, who were enlarging a fort.
There was an announcement for King Ptolemy V in hieroglyphs and Greek.

The key
Even though archaeologists had the translation, they still struggled to translate the hieroglyphs. 
The breakthrough came in 1920, when they noticed that the King's name was circled (a cartouche). They then could break the code and could read other Egyptian writing. 
This led to much more knowledge of ancient Egpyt.
