  • Reflexive pronouns are a type of pronoun that we use to refer back to the subject.
  • We only use reflexive pronouns when the object is the same as the subject.
→ Tom looked at himself in the mirror. 
→ Tom looked at Tom in the mirror.

  • Emma bought her mother a bouquet of flowers.
  • The object (her mother) is not the same as the subject (Emma) → we cannot use 'herself'.

Reflexive pronouns for emphasis
We can also use reflexive pronouns to put emphasis (nadruk) on something. 
E.g. to show that something was done without any help:
 → The children got dressed all by themselves
Or to show that someone was alone:
→ He lived by himself in an enormous house.
Or to put extra emphasis on the person we're referring to:
→ Sir Paul McCartney himself sang the final song.

When not to use reflexive pronouns
  • We do not use reflexive pronouns after prepositions of place (voorzetsels):                                → He had a suitcase beside himself.
  • We do not use reflexive pronouns after 'with' when it means 'accompanied by':                                              → She brought a few friends with herself.
