New Year's Resolutions

What are New Year's resolutions?

Discussion

In groups of 3-4, pick 3 topics to discuss:

1. Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution? Discuss why/why not.
2. What could you do this year to be a better student?
3. Are there any habits you would like to stop doing this year?
4. What language other than English would you like to learn, and why?
5. What are some bad habits that some of your friends have?
6. Are bad habits hard to break? Why?

Modals

Modals zijn een specifieke groep hulpwerkwoorden. 

Modals veranderen niet van vorm.

Met een modal gebruik je het hele WW.

Can 

CAN = Kunnen/kan

• Mogelijkheden.

Stress can cause health problems.

• Vaardigheden (iets wat je goed of niet goed kunt).

My mother can speak Spanish.

• Toestemming (vragen).

Can I come into your room?

Could

COULD = Zou kunnen

COULD is beleefder dan CAN

• Mogelijkheden (het zou kunnen gebeuren).

Stress could cause health problems.

• Ergens om vragen (bv bestellen in een restaurant) 

Could I have a steak, please?

• Mogelijkheid in de verleden tijd.

Could he travel by  bus when he was younger?

Should

• Advies geven

You look hungry, you should eat something.
You should  wear a jacket when you go outside.

Have to

• verplichtingen / geen keus

You have to do your homework, otherwise you'll be in detention.
