The Dutch government

Important concepts

• Parliament = States General = House of representatives (Tweede Kamer) & the Senate (Eerste Kamer). 
• Cabinet = Ministers + Prime minister + Secretaries of State.
• Government = Ministers + King.
• Council of ministers = all ministers.

Trias Politica

There is also something called the Trias Politica or ''seperation of powers''. What does this mean again? How are things devided in the Netherlands? You may use your book for help!

Trias Politica

• Legislative power (wetegevende macht).
• Executive power (uitvoerende macht). 
• Independent judiciary power (rechterlijke macht). 

Legislative power

• In the Netherlands this power lies with parliament.
• This power lies with those who make the laws. 
• Our legislative power is chosen! (local, province, country and european). We choose who ends up in the House of Representatives. The Provincial council chooses who ends up in the Senate.

Executive power

• This power lies with the government.
• This power lies with those who enforce the laws. 

Independent judiciary power

• This power lies with the judges/courts.
• This power lies with those who judge.
