§6.2 Calculating a side
Do you remember our old, bearded friend from the past?

Slide 1 - Diapositive

Learning goal:
You will learn how to calculate the length of an

UNKNOWN side of a right-angled triangle

Slide 2 - Diapositive

Who is he?

Slide 3 - Carte mentale

§6.2 Calculating a side
Welcome back to: Pythagoras!
Next slide shows us another picture
of this great Maths person

Slide 4 - Diapositive

Slide 5 - Diapositive

The theorem of Pythagoras
A
is about the sides of a right-angled triangle
B
is used to calculate an unknown side
C
is invented by Pete Agoras
D
is more than 2000 years old but still going strong

Slide 6 - Quiz

The theorem of Pythagoras...
asks for the use of a very handy scheme!

Slide 7 - Diapositive

exercise 6
length side
area square
p =
.. =
.. =

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Let's do exercise 8 together,
start doing 8 a), making a sketch!

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Here is the sketch:

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Now think hard about b:

Slide 11 - Diapositive

answer for b:

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Do c now:
First copy the scheme! Then:

Slide 13 - Diapositive

answer for c:

Slide 14 - Diapositive

Time to do d:

Slide 15 - Diapositive

answer for d:
'exact' is not rounded off!

Slide 16 - Diapositive

Homework time.
Do 0f §6.1 and 6.2 now,
+  6, 7 and 8
+  make the SCHEME with lengths for every exercise!!
+  remember to place the hypotenuse (=longest side) at the bottom
+ later on this LessonUp is continued

Slide 17 - Diapositive

A few fine points from this paragraph follow now!

Slide 18 - Diapositive

6.2 part 2 How to calculate length BD?!

Slide 19 - Diapositive

We want to calculate BD.
What to calculate first?

Slide 20 - Carte mentale

Solution:   First calculate length CD in right-angled triangle ACD.
Then only calculate length BD in right-angled triangle BCD!

Slide 21 - Diapositive

One more new thing from §6.2!

Slide 22 - Diapositive

How (on earth) can you calculate DE or GH?
We do not even have a right-angled triangle!

Slide 23 - Diapositive

How to calculate these lengths?

Slide 24 - Carte mentale

Solution: we make a right-angled triangle ourself!!
With that we can make the SCHEME and calculate the unknown side.
In the next slide you see Pythagoras, going crazy about his Theorem once more...

Slide 25 - Diapositive

Slide 26 - Diapositive

Homework time again.
Finish as much as you can!
