conditionals

Study page 162 too.

Zero conditional:

  If/when + present simple , present simple 

  If/when + present continuous, present continuous 

You use this conditional to talk about scientific facts, constant laws of nature, unchangeable rules, customs and personal routines; common states or events. 

Example:  If it is lunchtime in London, it is breakfast time in New York. 

                     If you add two and two, you get four.  

 First conditional:

If/when + present simple, will + infinitive 

You use this conditional to talk about possible future states or events. 

Only if the condition in the if-clause is met, will the main clause become true.

Example: 

If Real Madrid’s captain  doesn’t play, they won’t win the match.   

If I get an I-phone 5 for Christmas, I’ll be very happy  

Second conditional 

 If + past simple, would/could/should/might + infinitive 

You use it to talk about unlikely or imaginary states or events in the present or future 

Mind: the second conditional with be uses were instead of was in formal contexts   

Example: 

If I had a daughter, I would teach her Russian. (unreal present) 

If I started my own business, I wouldn’t work on Friday afternoons (hypothetical future)  

Third conditional

  If + past perfect, would have/could have /should have / might have + past participle (= voltooid deelwoord)                                                                                      

You use it to talk about imaginary states or events in the past   

Example:  If you had listened to the instructions, you would have known what to do.   

Mind:  Unless means “if not” and cannot be followed by  a negative verb form. 

Example:  Unless I tell you otherwise, you don’t have to come to class next week.

mixed conditionals

Second conditional + third conditional: if + past simple … would(n’t)/ might(n’t)/could (n’t)/should(n’t) have + past participle

Example: If his eyes weren’t so bad, he would haveseen the road sign.

Example: If I weren’t lazy, I could have gotten higher marks.

The if-clause refers to
the present (second conditional) , the main clause (the result) can refer to thepast (third conditional). If the present situation changes (not lazy) the pastsituation would have been different (higher marks)

Third conditional
+ second conditional: if + past perfect … would(n’t) / might(n’t)/could(n’t) /
should(n’t) / + infinitive

Example: If Sally hadn’t tuned her violin, it
wouldn’t sound very nice

The if-clause can state
the “cause” or “reason” and refers to the past (third conditional), with the
“result” in the main clause  referring to
the present (second conditional). A change in the past situation (Sally tuned
