Reported speech

Explain the difference between direct speech and reported/ indirect speech

She said: "I am angry with you."
She said that .....

Say that it works the same way as in Dutch, have a go

He said: "I will see you tomorrow."
He said that ...

He asked me: "Where do you live?"
He asked me ....

She asked me: "Do you know the answer to this question?"
She asked me ...

What changes?

• punctuation: quotation marks, question marks, etc
• relative pronouns (I, you, me, our, us, we, etc.)
• verb forms: verbs become 1 step 'paster'
• deictic terms

Use common sense with pronouns,

Explain that paster is not a word: present becomes past (present simple ->past simple, present erfect -> pas perfect, etc

will-> would

past -> superpast (past perfect)

You can't get paster than that

Diectic terms: take part of their meaning from the context, here, now, today, yesterday, tomorrow, this, these, etc

He said: "I have lived in this house for ten years."
He said that ...

She said: "I will see you tomorrow."
She said that ...

He said: "I did the dishes yesterday."
He said that ...

He asked: "What are you doing?"
He asked me ...

She said: "My students will have been working on this project for 3 months. "
She said that ...

He asked: "Can anybody hear me?"
He asked ....

He said: "I think that we are being followed."
He said ...
