Telling time (1)

• De klok is in halve uren verdeeld. 

• Je begint met één minuut over en eindigt bij 29 minuten over. Al die 29 minuten noem je 'past'. 

• Als het halve uur is geweest, begin je weer opnieuw, maar je telt wel terug, van 29 minuten voor tot 1 minuut voor. Van het halve uur tot het hele uur noem je de minuten 'to’.
  

Telling time (2)

• De kwartieren noem je ‘(a) quarter past' (kwart over) of ‘(a) quarter to' (kwart voor).
  

• Bij het eerste halve uur kijk je in het Engels naar het uur waar je vandaan komt en niet naar het uur waar je naar toe gaat, zoals in het Nederlands. Half 8 is dus een half uur na 7: half past 7
  

• Ben je weer bij het hele uur aangekomen, dan noem je dat 'o'clock‘

Ochtend of avond? (1)

Vaak wordt achter het tijdstip de aanduiding 'a.m.' of 'p.m.' vermeld om aan te geven of het voor de middag is of na de middag.

• a.m. = ante meridiem -> van 00:00 uur tot 11:59 uur (voor de middag) 
• p.m. = post meridiem -> van 12:00 uur tot 23:59 uur (na de middag)
  

Ochtend of avond? (2)

• 12 p.m. (12.00) wordt in het Engels ook wel noon genoemd.
  

• 12 a.m. (0.00) wordt in het Engels ook wel midnight genoemd.
